Guide Dogs General Election Manifesto 2024

Guide Dogs’ ambition is a future where every person with sight loss can live the life they choose.

Our manifesto for the 2024 UK General Election sets out actions the next government can take to improve the lives of people with sight loss in a number of different areas, from making our streets accessible to ensuring that children and young people get the support they need from the start.

Our key asks for the next government:

  1. Support a national law on pavement parking, like the ones in place in Scotland and London.
  2. Update guidance and standards to make sure our streets are accessible and safe for everyone.
  3. Make sure all rental e-scooter and e-bikes must be parked in fixed-docking stations and not blocking pavements.
  4. Put the safety of people with sight loss at the centre of the development of self-driving vehicles.
  5. Deliver a National Rail Accessibility Strategy to ensure our railways are accessible for everyone.
  6. Strengthen the law to stop guide dog owners being turned away from businesses and services, and ensure staff know the legal rights of guide dog owners.
  7. Make sure all children and young people with a vision impairment can access the life changing services and support they need, when they need it.

Below we set out our calls to all parties and candidates at the UK General Election in further detail. You can raise these points with your candidates on the doorstep or if you attend local debates between the candidates (often known as hustings).

Key facts:

  • Over 2 million people are estimated to be living with sight loss in the UK.
  • This includes an estimated 41,000 children and young people.
  • Only 1 in 4 people who are blind or partially sighted are in work.
  • 38% of people with sight loss are not confident getting out and about outside their home.
